AODA: Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act

The Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) came into effect June 13, 2005 and aims to make all levels of government, nonprofits, and private sector businesses in Ontario that have one or more employees accessible for people with disabilities by 2025. This legislation includes the accessibility of the organizations’ websites.

The standard relies on the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) guidelines developed by the Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). Organizations must meet WCAG 2.0 Level A compliance by January 1, 2014 and Level AA compliance by January 1, 2021.
